On 22nd February 2023, the council recognised that there is a climate crisis and thus the climate action plan was formed, with a commitment of a net zero carbon council by 2040. However, there is no mention of changes to our food system.
The environmental cost of our current food system is undeniably
high, studies show that transition to a plant based food system
could;
• reduce diet-related greenhouse gases by up to 75%
• Liberate 75% of agricultural land for other uses
• Decrease water usage by up to 54%
• Significantly reduce biodiversity loss
• Significantly Improve the environmental wellbeing
Therefore, we urge Huntingdon district council to
1. Implement 100% plant based catering
- All food and drink provided at internal council meetings should
be plant based
2. Promote plant based options
- Wherever the council has influence, such as leisure centres,
public cafes, schools etc. plant based options should be promoted
and encouraged
3. Encourage sustainable eating among residents
- Through local advertising and promotions, ensuring that the
message is climate friendly
Cambridge city council committed to 100% plant based council and we believe our council can influence other councils in the nearby counties to also make this impactful change which will increase the overall positive impact
Please join us in urging the council to make this crucial transition for a healthier and more sustainable future for our environment
